I lost my job
Five months of seniority up in smoke
I walked back home
Cold and tired, uninsured and broke
And I tried to count the times I’d borrowed from my parents
And I cursed my luck
Cursed my boss and my landlord and my hair
I cursed the whole
Vortex of elation and despair
And I sneezed so hard I smashed my forehead on the mirror
And I got down on my knees and I said, God...
I’m gonna have to let you go
It’s just not workin’ out, buddy
I read the news
Unemployment, hurricanes and AIDS
And I looked at all
The wars and famines, parties and parades
And I joined the prayer of all humanity that morning
When we cast our eyes to heaven and said, God...
We’re gonna have to let you go
You’re fired
We hired another guy to rule the universe
You’re fired
We’re tired of all the pestilence and plagues and worse
You’re canned
Demand no longer warrants your supply
You’ve been laid off, Lord
And I wish you good luck
Getting paid off, Lord
Well, we took you back
After that unfortunate incident with the flood
And we took you back again
After you made that mess with the lamb’s blood
But we feel you’re not performing up to your potential
And there’s younger guys who’d kill to fill your shoes
And I realized
I’d been talking to myself the entire time
And I lost my job
‘Cause I got a rotten attitude, and I’m
A kleptomaniac
And the flood is just a metaphor for
Drowning in ego
And hell’s just a place I constantly go
And I’m gonna have to let me go...
I’m fired
Retired from always trying to rule the universe
I’m sacked
In fact, I’ve got receipts I’ll never reimburse
Dismissed
Unlisted, ousted, dropped and booted
Axed, expelled, ejected, decommissioned and stuck out there
And I wish me the best of luck out there
‘Cause I put my hands together and said, God...
I’m gonna have to let me go
Five months of seniority up in smoke
I walked back home
Cold and tired, uninsured and broke
And I tried to count the times I’d borrowed from my parents
And I cursed my luck
